Bear Bryant's Legacy
Coach Bear Bryant was an outstanding coach and wonderful role model for generations of young people. I wanted to commemorate his legacy, and did so with this endearing painting of a young fan 'In Training' to 'be like Bear'
Although this print is available with a choice of mats, I really like this hounds tooth one to match his hat.

How Alabama Became Associated With Elephants
The story began in the 1930 season of Alabama football, when Coach Wallace Wade assembled a great team.
On October 8, 1930, Everett Strupper, sports writer for the Atlanta Journal, covered the the Alabama-Mississippi game in Tuscaloosa and wrote:
"That Alabama team of 1930 is a typical Wade machine, powerful, big, tough, fast, aggressive, well-schooled in fundamentals. When those big brutes hit you I mean you go down and stay down!
Coach Wade started his second team that was plenty big, but at the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity.
It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."
Strupper and other writers continued to refer to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants," the color referring to the crimson jerseys.
The 1930 team posted an overall 10-0 record. It shut out eight opponents and allowed only 13 points all season while scoring 217. The "Red Elephants" rolled over Washington State 24-0 in the Rose Bowl and were declared National Champions.
Throughout the 1940s, the University kept a live elephant mascot named "Alamite" that was a regular sight on game days, and it would carry the year's Homecoming queen onto the field every year prior to kickoff at the Homecoming game.
By the 1950s, keeping a live elephant year-round proved to be too expensive for the university. Instead, the UA spirit committee started hiring elephants, often from traveling circuses passing through or by Tuscaloosa, for every homecoming

The Birth of "In Training"
I created the first painting in my "In Training" art series at the request of Coach Pat Dye, when he was head coach at Auburn University. He wanted something specifically for children that he could use to raise funds for scholarships & charity.
On my way home from meeting with Coach Dye, I envisioned a little boy, tired from play. He was wearing only his “big boy” training pants and an over sized Auburn helmet. He was holding a football with one arm and his beloved toy tiger with his other hand.
That weekend, I sketched & painted it and the rest “is history”!
Since then, I have created "In Training" collegiate prints for over 30 universities.
You can't start too early to train 'em right!

Mixed Parentage
It's very confusing for children of 'mixed parentage' to know who to yell for, so they just yell!

The Deep South’s Oldest Football Rivalry is between Auburn and Georgia.
It began in Feb. 20, 1892 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta and has been played virtually every year since. The Tigers and the Bulldogs have played from 1898, 105 meetings, with the exception of 1943, when Auburn didn’t field a team due to World War II.
Coach Pat Dye won 99 games and four Southeastern Conference championships in 12 years as Auburn’s head coach.
However, he may best be remembered for bringing Auburn’s “home” game with Alabama to the Auburn campus in 1989. Tigers won 30-20!
The name of Auburn’s golden eagle mascot is Tiger.
But this is not to be confused with “Tigers”, which is the correct and only nickname for Auburn athletic teams. Not Auburn War Eagles, just Tigers.
“War Eagle” is a battle cry, dating back to 1864 and the Civil War at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia.
It's great to be an Auburn Tiger. War Eagle!
